5-4-3-2-1 brilliant ideas for Father’s Day

bbq manShould the third Sunday of June be renamed National Barbecue Day? It seems that everyone will be celebrating Father’s Day in this way. Apparently the UK held 135 million BBQs last year at an average cost of £41, says research by Equifax. That’s a whole lot of charcoal and charred sausages.

Team Minted, naturally, will also be hosting a BBQ so I’ve put together some ideas to help you with your own preparations.

Five BBQs to buy

There’s a massive range of BBQs out there if you’re in the market for purchasing one. Progressing from truly minted to very skinted, here are a selection of five to consider from Equifax’s list:

(a) Big Green Egg Medium for a whopping £875.
(b) Aldi Kamado Egg at £350.
(c) Everdure by Heston Blumenthal Cube for £149.
(d) Weber Smokey Joe Premium at £62.
(e) Wilko Disposable for a jaw-dropping £2.

Four yummy and easy salad & carb recipes (to accompany charred sausages)

If you want something nicer than a bag of leaves but with not too much more effort, try these:

(a) Greek salad. A bit retro but full of feta cheese – what’s not to like? Take it easy on the red onion though. Just chop four beef tomatoes, half a cucumber, one green pepper, half a red onion (thinly) and 200 g pack of feta. Sprinkle over a handful of black, pitted olives and drizzle with olive oil. Serves 4 to 6.
(b) Giant pesto couscous. This is a make-it-up-as –you-go recipe. Get a 300g or so bag of giant couscous and boil according to packet instructions. Drain and throw in half a jar (or as much as you prefer) of green pesto sauce. Mix. Add half a cucumber of finely chopped cucumber and some halved cherry tomatoes. Garnish with fresh herbs or pine nuts. You can also add sweetcorn, half a jar of chopped sundried tomatoes or one courgette diced small and pan-fried. Serves 4 to 6.
(c) Five-bean salad. You will need a 400g or thereabouts tin of each of the following: kidney beans, cannellini beans, chickpeas, butter beans and haricot beans. Add at least four chopped spring onions, a tin of sweetcorn and perhaps some small cubes of cheese (gruyere is nice). Mix with your favourite salad dressing. If you’re feeling fancy, you can always add in some cooked green beans. Serves 6 to 8.
(d) Roasted new potatoes with halloumi and asparagus. This is delicious, seasonal and really easy. I always get loads of compliments after serving it. Sadly it’s not my recipe but Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s, see here.

Three booze bargains

(a) Groupon has some pretty good deals here  but probably best if you’re looking for quantity over quality.

(b) Waitrose Cellar has 25% off all bottles over £5 when you buy six but it finishes today!

(c) Marks & Spencer has a wine, beer and spirits sale on see here.

Two discount gift ideas

(a) More imaginative: you can get Dad a day out doing anything from falconry to indoor sky-diving to shooting in the special offers section of Virgin Experience Days. Many have up to 50% off, see here.
(b) Less imaginative: you can get 20% off a Tesco gift cards including Now TV Sports (£10, in-store only), Google Play (£25), Gap (£25) and Vue (£25, in-store only). This offer is available from Monday 4th June until midnight on Sunday 17th June 2018.

One TV deal

The World Cup will be in full swing throughout Sunday afternoon with Costa Rica v Serbia (Group E) at 1pm on ITV, Germany v Mexico (Group F) at 4pm on BBC and finally back to ITV for Brazil v Switzerland (Group E) at 7pm. Thankfully it’s on terrestrial TV so expensive satellite channels aren’t required. If you need a new TV (Dad gift?) then Curry’s has a 50% sale on here . If you’ve a certain model in mind, check out where it’s selling for cheapest at https://pricespy.co.uk.
