This is the season for reflection – what was the past year like? What do I want to achieve next year? And it’s such a sentimental time of year even for hard-hearted cynics such as me. Our Christmas tree is adorned with ornaments created by junior such as the wonky angel shown here, made many years ago when he was in nursery. Home-made, however scruffy, is surely more tasteful and attractive than anything John Lewis, Selfridges or whichever shop you like markets for Christmas.
But what’s marked out 2017 for me has been the launch of SkintedMintedmum. It’s been a blast: over a year Jane and I have gone from being freelance reporters to our own bosses. We’ve faced a steep learning curve on IT skills (thanks to Yeswedowebsites for their help with this) - I am still on the nursery slopes here while Jane is speeding down the black runs. We’ve learnt how to distil sometimes complex personal finance issues into short blogs. We’ve not been afraid to be controversial. And all from a standing start – with no backing of a rich PR company or corporate sponsor either. We’ve achieved more than we dared to hope: we’ve won awards, appeared in newspapers and on TV too. Long may that continue.
Over the past year, Jane has covered everything from should you bother to save for a pension; how to avoid extra charges on budget airlines, when to buy a holiday home and our most-popular blog of the year, the reverse advent calendar. I’ve blogged about feeling the fear over state pension forecasts, bank branch closures and childcare costs – as well as less serious things such as making Great British Bake Off standard cakes (and failing). We’ll be back blogging in the New Year.
Our newsletter’s readership has grown in leaps and bounds: why not get your friends to sign up too? It’s a great way to keep abreast of all that’s going on in personal finance, plus the best deals and money saving tips (not all of which are totally serious...).
However, it’s not just about us. We’ve been enthused by the responses we’ve had from you over the past 12 months – feedback is so important. Next year, we hope to build on this with your help. This is your site – whether you’re a skinted or minted mum – or somewhere in the middle (and hello to skintedminted dads too: you’re more than welcome here). Help us make 2018 even better than 2017.
