Family finance tips whatever your budget

THINGS TO DO THIS WEEK:
Top up your Isa and pension. There’s only two weeks left to use this year’s Isa and pension allowances. Check out Jane’s blog on what funds to use for your Isa this year for some investment inspiration.
Check international driving requirements. From the minute the UK leaves the EU, Brits driving abroad could require an international driving licence (available from the Post Office) and an insurance ‘green card’ if no transition arrangements are in place. Without the right paperwork, you could be fined or be unable to pick up your rental car. With no certainty on the Brexit outcome, best to find these documents now to avoid trouble on holiday.
Organise probate. Watch out for massive increases in probate fees from next month. Currently, the charge is no more than £215 but from April it could be £6,000 for large estates. So if you’ve got to sort out probate for a recently-deceased relative, hurry up.
Kent Reliance online only easy access account issue 33 paying 1.5% on balances over £1,000. WE LIKE: Good rate and you can make unlimited withdrawals and deposits which makes it a useful rainy day account. Must be opened online but can be managed online and via post. WE DON’T LIKE: The rate is variable so you need to keep a watch on it.
DEALS OF THE WEEK:
Tesco has 20% discounts on a range of £25 gift cards, meaning you can buy the voucher for £20 but actually get £25 to spend. The latest offer gives 20% off Gap (£25), Odeon (£25) and New Look (£25) gift cards. Offer lasts until Sunday 31 March 2019. In selected stores, subject to availability.
Marks & Spencer* has reduced its 100-stem Mother’s Day bouquet from £30 to £25 and there is free delivery for the 80 daffodil and 20 tulip arrangement.
Last of the mother’s day deals: get discounts on spa specials at lastminute.com. Or see below for ideas on how to DIY it.
WORTH A LOOK:
Here’s another opportunity to get your own hot tub in the garden now the warmer weather’s coming on. This blow-up ‘spa pool’ is only £350 from Aldi.
Next has an at least 50% off sale on ie some items have a bigger discount. It started Saturday but there might be a few bargains left on clothing, shoes and homewares. Other brands such as boohoo, missguided and Lipsy are also included in the sale.
Looking for a phone upgrade? MoneySavingExpert says it has sorted out the cheapest deal in the UK for the iPhone 8 with www.mobiles.co.uk. You need to enter the code MSEIPH8 at the checkout. That should make the cost £137.50 upfront rather than £160. It’s £24 a month for two years thereafter. Even so, perhaps we can (w)ring a few more months out of the old Nokia ….
The Bank of England’s base rate stayed at 0.75% but inflation is up thanks to higher food and drink prices. At 1.9%, you’ll need to earn at least that in interest on your savings or you’re losing money in cash (good luck with that).
Meanwhile, the number of scams where criminals trick bank customers into transferring money from their accounts rose by 45% in the second half of last year. Over the whole year, more than 84,000 bank customers were victims of this kind of fraud, says UK Finance. On the other hand, between 2017 and 2018 there was a 27% rise in fraudulent insurance claims in the UK with fake household insurance claims up 52%. Most of these were perpetrated by householders aged 31 to 40, says Cifas.
It’s not surprising that everyone’s feeling the pinch. More than half of all residential mortgages now have a standard maximum term of 40 years, says Moneyfacts, meaning that lots of us could be paying off our houses well into retirement. So, plenty of depressing news without even having to mention Br**it.
